circa 800- The east African slave trade begins, taking slaves from Africa to the Middle East
1441- More than 1,000 Africans are imported to Portugal
1502- The first African slaves are brought to the Caribbean
1619- A Dutch ship brings the first permanent African settlers to Jamestown, Virginia
1641- Massachusetts becomes the first colony to recognize slavery as an illegal institution
1651- Rhode island declares that an enslaved person must be freed after 10 years of service
1663- A Virginia court decides that any child born to an in enslaved mother is a slave as well
1750- Georgia is last of the British North American colonies to legalize slavery
1784- Every northern state, except for New York and New Jersey had passed legislation calling for the end of slavery in that state
1788- Pennsylvania amends law to forbid removal of blacks from the state
1790- App. 200, 075 black slave shave been imported into the British colonies of North America
1808- The United States government bans the international slave trade
1857- The supreme court decides to open up all USA territories to slavery
1860- The USA is home to four-million slaves; republican Abraham Linchon is elected the 16th president

1876- Slavery comes to an end
